Southern Calendar Clock Co. “Fashion No. 3”, ca. 1878.
The walnut case is 32 inches tall with a clean finish; the door glass is old, the lettering complete and proper. Both dials
hold old paint and the proper lettering, but are probably old repaints, as these Seth Thomas dials are notorious for flaking and warping. The
time hands are replacements used by Seth Thomas on later models, and the seconds bit is also an improper replacement; the calendar
hand is a repaired, painted replacement. The 8-day, time-and-strike movement was made by Seth Thomas solely for the SCCC,
as stamped on the movement; it is running weakly and striking but its elliptical beat suggests it will need rebushing before too long;
the pendulum spring is also just about broken off (the pendulum rod is correct for this model). The R.T. Andrews calendar
movement advances properly with the time, and at least one and possibly both calendar roller papers have been replaced. Note
the star pendulum bob that came with this model; it lacks the leaf embellishment normally present on the top of the bob. Several
good labels inside. AAC sold two of this model in 2024 for $805 and $600. $450–$600.
