Forestville Mfg. Co. “miniature shelf acorn”, 1842-1849.  J.C. Brown made “acorns” in several styles, most commonly a large form with side arms (see #59 and #60) and several variations on a smaller form lacking side arms, as found here.  These “miniatures” are markedly less common.  He also made a wall acorn; all are highly desirable for their unusual curvilinear forms.  This example is 19.25 inches tall with clean rosewood veneer and no nicks, chips, or obvious repairs.  The dial glass is period/original, the lower glass a twentieth century replacement with a varnished overcoat on a reverse-painted tablet.  The varnish has yellowed.  The dial is also a twentieth century zinc contoured replacement and faded numbering.  The hands are appropriate but not original, the minute hand a close match.  The 8-day time-and-strike brass fusee movement is signed Forestville Mfg. Co, Bristol, CT USA and is running and striking on the wire gong.  There is a dark green label inside, with some staining.   AAC has sold three of this model for $7600, $4750, and $5750; the latter two had repainted tablets, as found here.  $2500–$5000.
