173. $750
Welch, Spring & Co. “Regulator No. 5”, ca. 1874. A 52-inch walnut
case with an old finish and two original glasses. This is a very early model that lacks the side glasses found on later versions. The finials are correct, complete, and original; the painted metal dial may be an old repaint and the hands are later Welch (Sessions)
hands. The 8-day double-wind, time-only, weight-driven movement is marked “Welch, Spring & Co., Bristol Conn” and is one
of several movements found in this model. It lacks a seconds bit. The clock is not running and the movement will need
cleaning at a minimum, perhaps more. The brass weights are proper, as is the pendulum stick and large brass bob. There
is a Welch, Spring & Co beat scale at the bottom and the interior is covered in worn black flock. No label. A rare
early model in very original condition. $750–$1500.
