172. $1000
Atkins Clock Co. “30-Day Extra”, ca. 1875. A
55-inch case veneered in rosewood; the dial bezel is grain-painted and has faded to a grey color also seen on the sides, and may have
occurred after the case was refinished. The case style closely resembles that described in Gregory & King, The Clocks
of Irenus Atkins, pages 58-61 #226. Both glasses are old/period but likely replacements. The 18-inch dial was probably
repainted long ago and has greyed and faded, with scattered chipping; some of the numbering has been strengthened. The hands
are as shown in the cited reference, although the seconds bit is a replacement. It holds a 30-day time-only movement (Type D,
see Gregory & King, The Clocks of Irenus Atkins, pages 58-61) driven by two painted 8.5-lb lead weights and is running nicely;
the weights are not original. The pendulum stick has been broken above the bob and repaired, there also is a repair at the crutch
insertion point. The bob is original. The doors do not latch shut although the latches work. AAC sold a similar
example in 2023 for $1400. $1000-$1500.
