168. $1500
Seth Thomas “Regulator No. 1 Extra”, ca. 1863. A 40-inch
case with beautiful rosewood veneer that looks old/original, but has no significant losses or evident repairs. Both glasses
are period/original, with loss to the gilt detail in the design above the “Regulator” wording on the rebacked tablet. A working
door latch and key. The dial has been repainted, the early-style hands are proper. The 8-day, time-and-strike movement
is unmarked and the one found in the time-and-strike models; it is running and striking on the wire gong, driven by two proper 8-day
ST weights. The pendulum stick is gilded, the early style bob imprinted with the name and location of the Seth Thomas factory
in Plymouth Hollow (renamed Thomaston in 1865). The black and gold label on the wooden weight shield has significant losses
but is still readable; it is protected by a Plexiglass sheet. There’s really nothing not to like here, it’s all original with
the exception of the repainted dial. Two recent sales: in 2023 at Cottone’s for $2000 and in 2022 at Schmitt Horan for
$3000. $1500–$3000.
