Ithaca Calendar Clock Co. “Three finial hanging cottage”, 1883. This is usually called the “Ithaca No. 7 Hanging Cottage”, but that is due to an error on Tran Duy Ly’s part, as the Ithaca hanging cottage models were designated No. 9’s. Moreover, there is a simple cottage without finials (the slant top cottage) which preceded this model, with this later model being referred to as the three-finial cottage by the Ithaca workers. Both cottage clocks came in shelf and hanging versions, and both were numbered 7 and 9 for the shelf and hanging versions. To further complicate things, while the early model could easily be converted to a wall clock by the addition of a base, the later, three-finial model could not be interconverted and was built either as a shelf or as a wall version (Warren, Ithaca’s Clocks Makers, page 118). This example was built as a wall clock but the base is a replacement, not quite a perfect match in finish. In addition, none of the finials are correct. The 28-inch walnut case has an old finish with attractive burl panels on the front; there is some damage to the “onion-top” that has been stabilized inside and out. Both glasses appear to be original, the paper dial mask has been varnished and is holding up well with light yellowing. The three hands are correct. The 8-day, time-and-strike movement was made by Welch for the ICCC; it is running easily and striking on a large bell. The calendars are advancing. There is a date and inventory number inside on the bottom board. The small nickel pendulum bob is correct. AAC sold a less than perfect example in 2022 for $500. $300–$500.
A major row has developed over the numbering of this clock. Many catalogs, as well as Tran Duy Ly's book, designate this as the No. 7, while the ICCCo., and Joel Warren, designate this as No. 9. Joel has the original records, and he says several catalog printers reversed the numbering for the shelf and wall versions. The good news is that you are free to number this clock as you see fit and I won't mind. That's the way we are around here - liberal.
