161.          $400

Welch, Spring & Co. “Round Head No. 4”, ca. 1880.  A second example, this one slightly smaller, at 29 inches in length due to the use of a smaller calendar dial – 5.5 inches in diameter; compare to the 8-inch standard calendar dial in #160.  This variant is not shown in Ly’s book, Welch Clocks, Second Edition, but a similar example is shown in his Calendar Clocks on page 344 under Welch, Spring & Co.  The specifications given for that example (#844) do not match the picture, specifying a 12-inch time dial (also found here and in all No. 4 Round Heads) and an 8.5-inch calendar dial, the standard size, but not consistent with the image.  The rosewood veneer here is clean and complete, but the grain painting on the time bezel has been lost.  Both glasses look to be original, with a painted time dial with some fading and a lower paper calendar dial that is old/original, and yellowed.  The minute and hour hands are period but not typical (although they are used by Welch, Spring & Co) and the weekday hand is correct; the calendar dial hands match those shown in the catalog illustration in Calendar Clocks noted above.  The 8-day, time-and-strike movement is signed EN Welch and is running and striking on a wire gong and the calendar hands are advancing.  A good label inside and a very good BB Lewis Perpetual Calendar label on the back of the calendar, with a jeweler’s label on the back.  An unusual example.  $400–$600.
