Seth Thomas “Garfield”, ca. 1883. This
classic, weight-driven shelf clock is 30 inches high, named after the second US president to be assassinated, in 1881. The
case is walnut in an old if not original finish and with a nice amount of “patina”. The door glass is modern, the dial
an old repaint, slightly yellowed and with the ST logo; the minute hand is slightly irregular. The dial trim, weights, pulleys,
and damascened pendulum bob are nickel-plated; the weights could use a bit of polish and are proper for this model, with the strike
weight being larger in diameter than the time weight. The brass 8-day, time-and-strike movement is signed and running, a bit
oily, and striking on a slightly rusty cathedral gong. There is a silvered beat scale and a white label inside on the bottom. No date on the back of the case. It’s hard to find this model with nickel weights; the last one AAC sold like this was in 2020
for $800. $700-$1000.
