Forestville Manufacturing Co. shelf clock, 1842-1849. A
15-inch case veneered in rosewood with a clean finish, two period/original glasses, and traces of gilt stenciling on the front of
the base. There is a missing piece of veneer on the bevel on the left side, but otherwise the veneer is complete; note the cracked
ivory door knob. The gilt stencils on the glasses are likely original, but they may have been rebacked. The image of JC
Brown in the middle of the lower glass looks original as well. The contoured metal dial holds old, possibly original paint with
a faint JC Brown signature at the top. The dial may not be original to this case, as there are unused screw holes on the sides. The hands are proper but the minute hand is modern. The 8(?-the springs are short)-day time-and-strike movement is signed Forestville
M.F.G. Co. It is running, but not confidently, and may need bushing; the strike is recalcitrant. It strikes a wire gong
when it feels like it. There is a dark and badly stained label inside from the Upson Brothers in Marion, CT. AAC sold a
similar model in 2023 for $175. $150-$300.
