Atkins & Porter “Improved Patent Eight Day Brass Clock” (triple decker), 1840-1846.  Merritt W Atkin’s first clockmaking firm, coincident with Atkins, Porter & Co., located in Forestville CT (just east of Bristol).  Most of the clocks made by this firm were OG’s and similar models, I see just one triple decker on LiveAuctioneers and none in the AAC database.  It’s worth noting that there were numerous Atkins making clocks around Bristol at this time and it appears they were all related.  This 34-inch triple decker has good mahogany veneer with an old finish and just a few missing pieces.  The columns and corbels are veneered with flame mahogany.  Both glasses are original and the mirror is period, but may be a replacement.  The middle tablet is commonly seen and very well preserved. The contoured metal dial is faded, discolored , and has significant losses in the corners.  It has been screwed into the dial supports at multiple positions.  The Maltese hands are not appropriate for this clock.  The 8-day, time-and-strike brass, weight-driven movement is stamped “Atkins & Porter Bristol CT USA”; it will run for a short while and will strike on the wire gong.  There are two old 8-day weights, an old pendulum bob, and a dark label with an overpasted label for a retailer [ _ & W Young & Co, Saint Stephen, N.B. (New Brunswick, Canada)].  St. Stephen is on the border with Maine, northeast of Bangor. A rare clock from these makers.  $150–$300.
