Forestville Mfg. Co. “Improved Eight Day Brass Clock” (triple decker), 1835-1839.  A 37-inch case with two doors and columns on each side of the doors, and a gilded gesso fruit basket splat.  The case is veneered in mahogany, the splat repainted in gold, the dial glass is original with some newer putty.  The middle mirror is modern, the lower period glass replaced and the tablet repainted nicely.  There are working door latches and keys, with ivory escutcheons.  I believe the columns hold the original faux painting but the capitals and plinths were repainted with the splat.  The gilded wooden dial is clean with some interesting service notations on the back from 1843 (poor Philo!) and 1877; the hands proper.  The brass 8-day, time-and-strike, weight-driven movement is unsigned; it is running and striking on a wire gong, and there is a spring-driven alarm hooked up that strikes on a bell (untested).  An old embossed brass pendulum bob and two period weights, with a readable if slightly tattered label on the backwall.  It stands on four ball feet that may be later additions/replacements, and the wooden dust covers are also modern replacements.  $150–$300.
