Birge, Peck & Co. “Extra Eight Day Brass Clock”, 1849-1859.  This was John Birge’s last business association, after almost 40 years of clockmaking in various firms bearing his name.  The veneer on the 32.5-inch case is mahogany with figured mahogany veneer on the columns and corbels and a polished finish.   All three glasses are period, with restored tablets; the lower tablet depicts the US Capitol, taken from a wood engraving published in 1852.  The contoured metal dial is clean with old paint but strong numbering; the hands are period and proper.  The strap-brass movement is unsigned, as is typical; it is running and striking with confidence. There are two old weights and an outstanding interior label with “The Breeze” steam train passing by.  AAC has sold six similar examples in the last six years for an average of $202.  This is an outstanding example, if you were going to  own just one triple decker...  $150–$250.
