Ephraim Downs 30-hour
wooden works OG, 1825-1845. Ephraim started out in 1810 making tall case clock movements for other manufacturers, and then left
Waterbury and went west to Cincinnati, following Ezra Reed, who had previously left CT to peddle clocks and was then making tall case
clocks with Luman Watson in Cincinnati. Ephraim returned to Plymouth CT in 1822. In Bristol he sold clocks to George Mitchell
and other manufacturers. This 30-hour OG is 27 inches tall with good figured mahogany veneer on the front and standard mahogany
on the sides. There are some chips and repairs on the bottom left side. The dial glass and mirror are both original, with
the original putty. The small wooden dial is clean with gilded spandrels, the hands are period and appropriate. The 30-hour
wooden movement is running and striking on a wire gong, driven by two period weights. The label is clean and complete and has
been lacquered. There is only one other OG by Downs on LiveAuctioneers. $75–$150.
