Riley Whiting carved column & splat shelf clock, 1828-1835.  Here is a short-drop version of a Whiting shelf clock, at 29.5 inches tall and 17 inches wide.  The case has good veneer with a clean finish; there are two carved half-columns and a carved splat that is probably a replacement.  The paw feet and rear turned feet look original.  The dial glass is modern, the lower glass old with an excellent repainted tablet, unsigned.  The wooden dial has notable losses (“stretch marks”) but is otherwise clean and bright; this clock is missing its hands.  The 30-hour time-and-strike wooden movement is correct for a Whiting clock but will only run for less than a minute, and the strike is stuck.  There is an old embossed pendulum bob (more commonly found in steeples) and two period weights, with a worn but readable label.  $100–$200.
