Austin Chittenden 30-hour carved column & splat, 1831-1837.  Austin worked in Lexington, MA and may have been an “assembler” of clocks, buying cases and movements from others.  Here we have a long-drop case (35.5 inches tall) with carved half-columns and an eagle splat, with mahogany veneer and an old finish.  The dial glass and mirror both appear to be original.  The wooden dial is clean with painted spandrels and touch-up to the numerals.  The diamond hands are period and appropriate. The 30-hour, time-and-strike wooden “groaner” movement is running and striking without issue, with two proper square cast iron weights. The large label is dark and tattered at the bottom but is readable.  Chittenden favored groaner movements and there are a number of examples on LiveAuctioneers.  $100–$200.
