Seth Thomas column
& splat, ca. 1834. A 30.5-inch case with the tarnished bronze urn finials on screws and bronze-stenciled half-columns
and splat. The splat has split horizontally and been repaired; the bronze stenciling is original and strong. There are
carved paw feet in front and turned feet in back, all look original. Both glasses are original with the original putty, the
tablet has suffered considerable losses. The gilded wooden dial is clean with reinforced numbering and gilding and painting
in the spandrels – an unusual touch. The diamond hands are period and appropriate and found on other examples like this. The 30-hour wooden movement runs for a bit and then stops suddenly; it strikes on the iron bell. There are two period weights
and a decent label inside on the backwall. New tin dust covers and a new tin movement cover on the back. The average of
four sales of similar clocks by AAC is $186. $125–$250.
