Eli Terry, Jun’r
pillar & scroll, 1831-1835. This is a late pillar & scroll clock probably made shortly after Eli Terry & Sons discontinued
business in 1831. Jun’r had built two clock factories in Plymouth to provide clocks and parts for the earlier partnership and
he continued making clocks, later taking on partners Milo Blakesley and Warren Goodwin in 1835. AAC sold a pillar & scroll
by this latter company, but this is the first one I have with just Jun’r’s name on it. Junior was abbreviated as Jr and Jun’r
on clock labels at this time. I can find no other P&S clocks on LiveAuctioneers from Eli Terry Jun’r or Jr. The case
is 31 inches tall with brass urn finials on screws; the veneer is complete, without repairs, and with a clean finish. There
are well-done repairs to the scroll tips, the feet and skirt look original. The dial glass is probably original, the lower glass
modern with an unsigned tablet. The door latch is functional with a key. The gilded wooden dial is clean with proper period
hands. The 30-hour time-and-strike wooden movement will run for a while and will strike on the iron bell, with two period weights
and a modern pendulum bob. There is a dark and beat-up but readable label inside. A rare example. $250–$400.
