Wm. L. Gilbert Clock Co. “Shield”, ca. 1881.  A rare model with justone example found on LiveAuctioneers and one on the Antique Clocks Identification and Price Guide.  The 29-inch walnut case has an old, patinated finish over an attractive burled walnut front with an ornate and proper center finial; note the incised shield on the crest (hence, the name).  There are two side glasses on this miniature wall clock; the stenciled door and dial glasses look to be original (as are the side glasses).  The dial is worn and stained paper in a nickel bezel with appropriate hands; the 8-day, time and half-hour strike movement is signed and running, striking delicately on a nickel bell and regulated by a single barrel pendulum, as shown in the catalog illustration (Ly, Gilbert Clocks, page 134).  No label, or evidence thereof.  This little gem won’t take up much room and will look and sound great.  Schmidt’s Antiques sold one in 2024 for $325.  $200–$400.
