208. $500
Chauncey Jerome (attr.) gilt gallery clock, ca. 1852. A 26-inch diameter
gilded case with applied decorations. Some of the gilding appears to be restored, particularly on the rounded bezel. The
chapter ring on the dial is 14 inches; the dial is metal with old paint. The hands are correct to style but appear to be hand-made
and not original. The dial glass is old, but the putty is recent. The 8-day, time-only brass, spring-driven movement is
unsigned but matches one found in another large Jerome gilt gallery clock, as described by Mike Bailey. A little bit of oil
on the pivots got it running; the oddest thing about this clock is that there is no access door to the pendulum. To hang the
bob you lift the bottom of the dial away (there are no screws holding the bottom down) and reach in. There is no restart lever
either, so you have to swing the clock back and forth a bit to start the pendulum. Lastly, the bezel is hinged at the top, so
you have to rest the bezel on your head while you wind it. Poor design, but it does look good! There is no label and no
evidence of a label, inside or on the back. No sales records for a gilt Jerome clock. $500–$1000.
