198. $250
Welch, Spring & Co. “Regulator No. 3”, ca. 1878. A
weight-driven regulator, time-only, 8 days with two weights. The 34-inch case is in rosewood veneer in good condition,
with just a few chips and repairs. Both glasses are old, the dial glass with the original putty, the tablet probably repainted
or just rebacked. It is one of several gilt patterns used on this model (Ly, Welch Clocks Second Edition page 243). The
dial has been repainted, with the makers’ name, and period hands. The movement is as shown in the cited reference, is die-stamped
“Welch, Spring & Co. Bristol, Conn US”, and is running without issue, driven by two 3.5-lb round weights. The brass has
been polished off the pendulum bob and the black and gold label inside on the backwall is very faint; the lower door does not latch. An uncommon clock with just two examples on LiveAuctioneers; AAC sold one in 2021 for $350. $250-$400.
