190. $1000
Seth Thomas Clock Co. “Regulator No. 18”, ca. 1883. An impressive weight-driven regulator, 54 inches long in walnut veneer with a beautiful finish. Both glasses appear to be original; the dial pan may be new, and certainly has been repainted, with the Seth Thomas name and logo. The blued hands are ST issue, the seconds hand maybe not. The 8-day, time-only, weight-driven movement is as shown in Ly, Seth Thomas Clocks & Movements, Vol. 1, page 300. It is running without issue, driven by a ST nickel weight and regulated by a wooden ST pendulum stick and a damascened 6-inch nickel bob. Sweet. There is a beat scale but no label, and no year of manufacture on the back. There are electrical connections on the top of the case, but no evidence of a replaced movement – I think the backboard was replaced with the original electrified movement. AAC has sold three of this model for an average of $1268; this is the nicest of the group, given the damascened nickel bob, clean dial, and the beautiful walnut case. $1000–$1600.
I suggested that the backboard has been replaced, but ST collector Joe Fugazzi does not think so, and I believe he is correct. There are some small markings above the movement that may relate to the electrical connections on top. This is the correct movement for this model, as shown in Ly, Seth Thomas Clocks & Movements, Vol. 1, page 300.
