Welch, Spring & Co. “Regulator No. 5”, ca. 1874.  One of Welch’s most desirable clocks, a 52-inch, two-weight, time-only regulator.  The case is walnut with an old finish and umpteen finials, all of which look correct and original; the top right finial has a broken top ring.  The dial glass is modern, the lower glass and four side lights are period/original.  The side glasses have gilded trim pieces.  The dial is painted, possibly repainted, possibly relined, with proper Welch hands, including a seconds bit.  The 8-day, time-only movement is unmarked but is as shown in Ly, Welch Clocks, Second Edition, page 245.  It is running and driven by two correct brass weights and the original pendulum stick and bob.  The interior is covered in black paper and there is a Welch, Spring & Co. beat scale at the bottom. No label, but a working door key and crank are included.  This is about as nice an example as you will find; Schmitt Horan sold a nice one in 2024 and in 2023 for $1500 and $1400, respectively.  $1000–$1500.
