188.           AD-1.             $1200

E. Howard & Co. “No. 58 Regulator”, ca. 1900.  A 40-inch oak case in clean condition, with four proper finials and no cracks or dents.  Both glasses are likely original, with old/original putty around the lower glass.  The painted metal dial holds old paint, with slight flaking; the Howard signature is faint.  The hands are correct.  The movement is signed; it is oily and runs for a short while before stopping; it will need cleaning.  There is a proper No. 5 weight and a nice, damascened bob; the pendulum tie-down is missing the clip.  Oak cases sell for a bit less than walnut or cherry; the most recent sale of an oak No. 58 was at Cottone’s last spring for $1600.  $2500-$3500.

Joe Fugazzi stopped by to look at this clock.  He noted that while the hands are correct, they are a bit short for this model and may have come off a No. 5 banjo.  Similarly, the weight here is from a No. 5 banjo; a rectangular weight may be more appropriate, but I have seen both weights in this model.  Lastly, there is some question about the damascened bob, as the pattern is not typical, but Howard used several different patterns for these bobs.  Neither of us has seen this pattern before.
