L.F. & W.W. Carter weight-driven calendar, 1862-1868. This
calendar clock is 30.5 inches long, veneered in mahogany with an old, dark finish. Carter calendar clocks are confusing
because they made very similar models, with only slight changes, including changes in length of the case, the size of the calendar
bezel, and whether they were spring- or weight-driven. Elias Burwell was an early partner and made some of the Lewis calendar
mechanisms, but here the mechanism was made by Lewis, as stated on the back cover. The dial glass is modern, the calendar dial
glass period/original. The time dial is likely a repaint and the calendar dial may be as well. The calendar hands look
correct, the time hands are typical, but the weekday indicator hand looks like a replacement. The unsigned weight-driven, 8-day,
time-only movement is correct for this model and is running, driven by two 4-lb rectangular weights. The weekday hand is advancing
but the calendar hand is not being triggered and needs adjustment – there is a nut at the top to allow up/down adjustment. This
appears to be a replacement lift stick. There is a partial label inside and on the back of the calendar door noting that it
was made by B.B. Lewis. AAC has sold four of this model for an average of $475. $375–$500.
