Seth Thomas Clock Co. “Ogden”, 1886. A 21.5-inch walnut case with an old, patinated finish. The door glass is original with a silver stencil, with some losses. The dial holds old and likely the original paint, with the ST logo faintly visible. The hands are ST issue. The 8-day, time-and-strike movement is signed and running, striking on a cathedral gong. There is an alarm hooked up, but untested. A proper ST nickel pendulum bob and a degraded black label on the inside bottom. The date of manufacture is stamped on the back. So, Ogden, where? This one is a puzzle, as there is no Ogden in New England that I can find, or even the general northeast. This clock could be named after the Utah city. There are no recent sales of the Ogden on LiveAuctioneers. $150–$300.
Here's what I think - Ogden UT was the meeting point for the two transcontinental railways at Promontory Summit (just west of Ogden) in 1869. This was a major newsworthy event in the post-Civil War US, and everyone knew about Ogden and the importance of completion of a railroad linking New York to Sacramento and the West Coast.
