Spencer, Hotchkiss & Co. Eight Day Repeating Brass Clock, 1829-1832.  An impressive 34-inch empire shelf clock with two full columns on each side, a cornice top, an unusual drop-down door on the bottom.  The walnut and mahogany veneer is clean and polished, with no noticeable repairs – an attractive case.  The dial glass is modern, the middle glass is period with new putty and a new tablet.  The pull-down door on the bottom section is original to the clock and was mounted with small hinges on the bottom.  The hinges, no longer in place, are included.  The wooden dial is clean and in good condition, but the Roman numerals were originally gilded and were later redone in black, probably to improve visibility.  The hands are improper substitutions and should be diamond hands.  The 8-day, time-and-strike brass movement is unsigned.  It will run for a few minutes and stop and will need service; it will strike. There are two 8-lb iron weights and a period pendulum bob; the label has been lost except for a few scraps, and the underlying wallpaper is not in good shape either.  AAC sold a similar example last July for $250.  $200–$400.
