Riley Whiting
column & splat, 1828-1835. A 32.5-inch case with a clean finish over good mahogany veneer. The stenciling on
the columns and splat is bright and shows little wear, so it may have been redone. The paw feet in front and the turned feet
in back are modern. Both glasses are old but may be replacements, as the putty is newer; the tablet is wonderful and new. The wooden dial is clean but has yellowed, and shows some flaking; the hands period and appropriate. The 30-hour wooden
time-and-strike movement is running like a champ, striking on the iron bell, with two period weights. It is a Whiting movement
and has been rebushed with plastic bushings. The label is water-stained but readable and mostly complete. Period dust
covers on the pulleys on top. A great looker, and it runs. $150-$300.
