F. & E. Sanfords
REPRODUCTION shelf clock, ca. 2005? This clock is a reproduction, made by the late Chris Brown, of an F. and E. Sanfords clock
that bore a Norris North early 4-arbor Torrington pull-up movement. Brown had an original 4-arbor movement but no case, and
so he built a replica of the Sanfords clock. F & E Sanfords were clockmakers in Goshen, CT from 1818-1820; I can find but
one sale by these makers, for the clock that may have served as the model for the Brown reproduction, at R.O. Schmitt in 2004 (unfortunately,
this auction is not listed in the Schmitt Horan Legacy auction search database). Chris Brown’s clocks, including this one, sold
at auction in 2011; this clock is shown and briefly described in Russ Oechsle’s book, Good for a Time, The Christopher R. Brown Research
Archive, on page 56. The 33-inch case (with the wooden reproduction finials) was made from old wood with tiger maple veneer,
reeded columns on each side, and a pillar & scroll top. Both glasses are old, the dial glass with a significant crack across
the top, and the lower glass with a well-preserved period tablet, and a stable crack across the upper left corner. There are
some losses to the tablet on the tree to the right. The period wooden dial is appropriate to the case and movement and may have
accompanied the pull-up movement, as the winding ports that are painted on the dial do not appear to be later additions. The dial is clean and with good color and numbering, the hands are period. The wooden 30-hour movement appears to be intact,
but I did not hang the weights and did not test it. There is a period pendulum but, of course, no label. It’s hard to
know how to think about this clock. An authentic replica? $400–$800.
