Eli Terry &
Sons quarter-column & splat with window-shade alarm, 1823-1831. A 29.5-inch case on paw feet in front and turned feet in
back. The mahogany veneer is clean with some repairs to the door frame and to the area around the escutcheon. The stenciling
on the quarter columns and splat is quite bright, the pineapple finials look old, and both glasses are old with newer putty. The tablet was repainted in 1970 by D. Briggs. The period/original dial is in clean condition with interesting spandrels; there
are three repair inscriptions on the back from as early as 1857. The diamond hands are proper and the alarm ring is likely original,
on a wooden base. The wooden 30-hour, time-and-strike movement with the alarm attachment will not run and I did not remove it
for inspection; the strike cord is broken so I did not test the strike, but the “window shade” alarm at the bottom of the case will
work. You wind it with your finger on the right and the crown wheel on the left causes the alarm arm to swing back and forth
and strike the iron bell when the alarm is released by the lever coming down from the movement. There is a good label inside. An uncommon clock with a remarkable alarm mechanism; there is one similar example on LiveAuctioneers that sold at Schmitt Horan in
2021 for $650. $500–$800.
