Antique American Clocks July 2021
47. $150
Seth Thomas “Office Calendar No. 4”, ca. 1863. A classic calendar from Seth Thomas, one
of the first three models offered by the firm and shown in their 1863 catalog; later models adopted this style. This one has
the original rosewood veneer on the 47-inch case, with very few losses and no repairs. Originality pretty much ends there. Both glasses are new, as are the painted dial pans. The hands are correct but new; the movement is incorrect and should be in
a Fashion No. 1 case, as indicated on the lower crosspiece of the signed movement. Somewhere there is a Fashion No. 1 clock
without a movement. On the positive side, the clock is running, striking, and the calendar is advancing. The calendar
movement is the later Andrews mechanism, patented in 1876; early No. 4’s would have had the earlier Mix Brothers mechanism. There is a black label on the inside of the door, but it cannot be read. This is a good-looking, running clock, and at least
it doesn’t have a quartz movement inside. Proper examples sell for $300-$450. $150-$250.
