Seth Thomas Clock Co. “Fashion No. 8”, ca. 1887. One
of the last Fashion models, produced by Seth Thomas after they bought out Southern Calendar Clock Co., and one of the hardest models
to find. The No. 8 is distinguished from earlier models, and in particular the No. 5, by the paired rosettes on the calendar
door and the shift of the inner door handle away from the outer door frame, eliminating the need to cut out part of that door frame
to accommodate the handle. The case has a polished finish with original finials in outstanding condition. The door
glass is wavy, the Fashion lettering correct (6.5 inches long, 3.25 inches tall), with a small touch-up to the ‘F’. Both
dials hold the original paint and lettering, with light flaking to the calendar dial. There are Seth Thomas Fashion hands. The
8-day time-and-strike movement is running and striking on the cathedral gong, but the calendar movement is sticky and will need attention. The movement is pinned to the cast iron frame and is signed S. Thomas, with the ST logo. This model used the long drop pendulum
and the bob is damascened nickel, with a beat scale behind it. There is a ‘Do Not Oil’ label on the back wall. AAC has
sold three Fashion No. 8’s for an average of $3258, and most recently for $3525. $2750-$3600.
