Welch “Improved Eight Day Brass Clock”, ca. 1860.  This is an unusual model that I have not seen before and is not shown in Ly’s book on Welch clocks.  The 32-inch case (36 inches with the finials) is veneered in mahogany with an old finish.  Part of the base plate on the right was broken off long ago; the finials are likely original but the top of the case does not look typical, and there is some missing veneer on the edge plates.  The dial glass is a replacement.  The painted metal dial may be original, with old/original paint, and the minute hand is a replacement, slightly too long.  The 8-day brass, time-and-strike movement is unmarked.  It is dusty and will only run briefly, and will strike, reluctantly.  There are two period 8-day weights, very old weight cords that have broken and been retied – they will need to be replaced after you clean the movement.  A good and large label on the backwall, again one I have not seen before.  Welch did make some clocks along these lines, and more so, with Solomon Spring, a partner in the late 1860’s.  $200–$400.
