W.S. Conant “Column No. 1”, ca. 1845.  Conant was a retailer in New York City in the 1840’s and was probably the Conant of “Conant & Sperry”, also a New York City retailer.  This four-column clock was later retailed by Seth Thomas as the “Column No. 1”; it is 25.5 inches tall in mahogany, with flame mahogany on the front OG panels top and bottom.  The finish is old and a bit dark.  Both glasses are original, held in place with the original putty.  The tablet is characteristic of these New York retailers and in excellent condition.  The wooden dial has a repaired horizontal split, with some touch-up and fading to the dial.  The hands are period. The 30-hour brass, weight-driven movement is unsigned, and likely made by Connecticut makers.  It is clean and running, striking on a large cast iron bell and driven by two wafer weights in the side channels.  There is a good label on the backwall. This is a nice clock for the money.  $100–$200.
