Atkins & Downs for George Mitchell, 30-hour carved column & splat shelf clock, 1833-1837.  Atkins & Downs (Rollin and Irenus, Anson) were almost exclusively wholesalers to retailers like George Mitchell.  The 28.5-inch case has an impressive carved eagle splat and carved half columns, with mahogany veneer and a clean finish.  The veneer along the baseplate has been replaced. There are carved and gilded period finials on top and small carved paw feet in front, with turned feet in the back.   Both glasses are modern replacements with an attractive tablet.  The wooden dial is clean and colorful, note the spandrels. The hands are period and appropriate, the 30-hour time-and-strike wooden movement will run for a short while; the strike is misbehaving and will not stop striking.  There are two period weights, an old pendulum bob, and a well-preserved but darkened label. I like this example.  $300–$400.
