Mark Leavenworth
miniature carved case clock, 1822-1824. Let’s start with full disclosure - this is a restored clock. Here’s what’s original:
The case and door (made by Charles Platt); it is stamped “VII” on the top of the case under the pulley cover. The backboard
may be original, but the label is a reproduction. The backboards on these clocks were attached with screws to allow access to
the weights. The glasses are period but new to this case, the tablet painted and “aged” by Tom Moberg. The dial is new
and expertly painted by The Dial House; the hands are modern but appropriate. The 30-hour time-and-strike wooden movement is
a correct movement for this case and was made by George Bruno. The weights are appropriate, but not original. The pendulum
bob is period. The 22.25-inch case has been refinished beautifully; the turned feet in back may be replacements, with period/original
(maybe) paw feet in front. The top of the case slides out to access the wooden weight pulleys. These clocks came with
square cast iron weights that were accessed by removing the screw-in backboard; the lead weights here are replacements, 3 lb 8 oz. The clock has not been run in many years and will not run or strike without some effort. A gorgeous clock with restoration. These clocks are rare – by my count four have sold in the past twenty-five years, for as much as $54,000 in 2001, and my consignor
says he knows of only six. Most recently, Schmitt’s Antiques sold a poorly restored example for $2500. $2500–$4000.
