Seth Thomas pillar & scroll, 1827-1842.  This is only the second (of 12) standard pillar & scroll clocks by Seth Thomas that I have sold with a label that acknowledges the Eli Terry patent on this style of clock.  For that reason it is rare in my book, and that may be why this backboard was saved from destruction.  The rest of the case appears to be a reconstruction, with the likely exception of the door and the base plate.  The door has probably been reveneered.  The scroll top, skirt, and feet are almost certainly modern replacements.  The brass urn finials are the proper Seth Thomas type; the dial glass appears to be original, the lower glass is modern with a very fine tablet.  The dial is clean with gilding in the corners and proper period hands.  The 30-hour wooden time-and-strike movement runs briefly but the brass escape wheel needs bushing; it will strike on the iron bell.  There are two period weights and an old pendulum bob, and a good label with some losses, but quite readable.  A beautiful clock, just not all as original as we would like.  Buy it anyway – the label is rare.  $250–$500.
