1. $1200
Seth Thomas off-center
pillar & scroll, ca. 1820. This highly desirable pillar & scroll clock stands 28 inches tall without the brass
urn finials; the finish is clean and polished, the mahogany veneer without damage or obvious repair. The scroll top, feet,
and skirt look original, and with no repairs to the scroll tips. The dial glass is modern, the lower glass original with
a repainted tablet. The brass urn finials are the proper Seth Thomas style on steel posts. There is a working door
lock and ivory escutcheon. The wooden dial has been touched up professionally to hide some losses and there is an elaborate
gilded gesso double-ring pattern around the mainstem, surrounded by quarter-hour Arabic numbering that is found on all off-center
P&S dials; note the colorful spandrels. The numbering was strengthened, probably during restoration. The diamond hands
are period and correct. The 4-wheel wood-strap movement is correct and running, striking on an iron bell. There are
period cast iron weights compounded on four brass pulleys (they should be wooden) and a clean label on the backboard. AAC has
sold six similar examples in the last six years for an average of $1990. $1200-$2500.
This is the last set of Jeff Villet-restored
clocks. Don’t pass up these outstanding restorations.
