202.         $500

Waltham Watch Co. “No. 1546 Willard banjo”, ca. 1930.  A 42-inch dark, probably mahogany case with cross-banding on the throat and box and two excellent glasses, the lower glass of the Boston State House. The brass urn finial on top is not typical.  The dial glass is convex, the signed, painted dial with a few chips and the name of the retailer, Smith Patterson Co., a Boston jeweler from 1895 to 1956.  The hands are proper.  The 8-day weight-driven, time-only movement is signed (Waltham Watch Co., USA) and is running, driven by a lead weight.  The average sale price of 1500-series banjos from Waltham (7 sales) is $632; this is the first one I have had with cross-banding.  $500–$700.

Andy Dervan informs me that the serial number on this clock dates it to 1916, manufactured by the Waltham Clock Co.  Andy always keeps me on my toes, for which I am grateful!
