Wm. L. Gilbert Clock Co. “Olympia”, ca. 1875. Here is another
example of a clock Gilbert made for sale by secondary retailers, in this case the Eureka Clock Co. out of Paris, France. The
model is the General (see Ly, Gilbert Clocks, page 329), here with a simple calendar addition, and renamed the Olympia. The
28.5-inch oak case has been refinished and has a varnished gloss; note the darker wood applied leaf carvings around the front. The glass is likely original with a well-preserved gold stencil; the paper dial is unsigned and yellowed, the hands are as shown for
the General model. The 8-day, time and half-hour strike movement is signed and running, striking on a cathedral gong made by
Gilbert. There is an outstanding black and gold label inside noting the Paris, France distributor; I wonder how it got back
to the US? There are a couple of sales of a General on LiveAuctioneers, and AAC sold a General with “National” on the glass,
but no Olympias. An American in Paris. $150–$250.
