Ithaca Calendar Clock Co. “No. 5 Round Top”, 1873. A second
rare shelf clock from the ICCC. This one came in several formats, two of which are shown in Ly, Calendar Clocks page 137, and
more can be found on LiveAuctioneers. The case is 22.5 inches tall with rosewood veneer and grain painting over the top, including
the round decorative trim at the top (Joel Warren confirms that this is correct). The flip-up door between the dials is correct
but appears to be a replacement; the upper dial glass may be modern, the lower dial glass is older. Both dials are paper with
light wear and staining. A previous owner stamped his name on the time dial, now faded; he also signed the backboard inside
in 1901. The hands are correct all around. The 8-day, time-and-strike movement was made by Welch for the ICCC; it is running
without issue, striking on a wire gong. The calendar date hand and weekday roller are advancing; the paper on the rollers is
badly yellowed and worn. The brass pendulum bob is suspended from a bent paperclip, as the original suspension chain is lost. A penciled date of 1873 is found on the backboard, inventory number 339. Just two matches on LiveAuctioneers, most recently
selling at Cottone’s in 2016 for $400. $250–$400.
