146. $50
Seth Thomas Clock Co. “Cottage Extra”, ca. 1879. We can
be reasonably sure of the manufacture date as the tablet shows a patriotic image from 1876 (the U.S. Centennial celebration in Philadelphia)
and an identical clock is shown as a catalog illustration from an 1879 ST catalog (Ly, Seth Thomas Clocks & Movements, Vol. 1,
page 219). The 14.5-inch case looks like mahogany, with some degradation to the finish on the door; both glasses are period/original,
with a wonderful tablet, as noted. The Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia was the first World’s Fair. The contoured
dial has been repainted, the hands are ST issue. The 30-hour time-and-strike movement is ST issue as well and is running and
striking on a wire gong. There is a good label inside. I have not seen this tablet before, but I like it! $50–$150.
