R.W. Patterson “Eight Day Brass Clock”, ca.
1860. Patterson was an importer of US-made clocks into Toronto in the mid-1800’s. This clock was likely made by Seth Thomas,
as it corresponds closely to the Column & Cornice model and the movement looks like a Seth Thomas movement, although it is unmarked. The case is 32 inches tall with good mahogany veneer all around and a clean finish; the columns and capitals have been repainted. All three glasses look to be original, with well-preserved tablets of the Merchants’ Exchange in Philadelphia and an eagle clutching
arrows and olive branches. I suppose it is a Canadian eagle, or should it be a lion? Merchants Exchange was a brokerage,
and the building was completed in 1834, built in the Greek Revival style. It is still standing, serving as the headquarters
of the Independence National Historic Park. The contoured, painted dial has had a lot of touch-up and has been lacquered,
with some yellowing. The hands are period and proper. The 8-day, weight-driven, time, strike, and alarm movement is running,
striking on a wire gong, and the alarm is working as well, also weight-driven, striking on a cast iron bell mounted over the wire
gong. There are three proper weights and a good but dark label inside on the backwall. All in all, a very nice example. Shipping or delivery to Canada is not a problem – I’ll get out my passport. One similar sale on LiveAuctioneers. $175–$250.
