44.                   $200

Brewster Manufacturing Co. “cigar box clock”, 1852-1854.  Mostly associated with the New England Clock Co., these cute little clocks with differently colored glasses were offered by several other sellers as well, but this is the first one I have had by Elisha Brewster’s company. There is one other sale on LiveAuctioneers for this model by Brewster, but it differs slightly with the addition of a small base. This clock is 11 inches tall with walnut veneer all around and an original door glass.  I believe they first stenciled in the black pattern and then backed it with various colors, as you can find many variations.  The metal dial holds old paint and the Brewster  Manufacturing Co. signature at the top; the hands are period and appropriate.  The 1-day ribbed ladder movement will run briefly.  There is a good label inside, hidden by the bell for the alarm, which is not hooked up.  $200–$400.
