Riley Whiting
“Modern Improved Eight Day Clock”, 1828-1835. A second example from Mr. Whiting, slightly different in style but every bit as
impressive. The 37-inch refinished case has good mahogany veneer and four half-columns, along with a modern dial glass and an
old lower glass with an outstanding tablet by Tom Moberg. There are two working door latches with keys. The wooden dial
is clean with good gilding, the hands are proper and period. The 8-day, time-and-strike wooden Whiting movement is running and
striking on the cast iron bell, driven by two modern replacement weights on wooden pulleys and regulated by a period pendulum bob. There is a good label inside, along with a winding crank. Just beautiful. If you’ve been thinking you need an 8-day wooden
works clock, this is the sale to find one. They are not common. $400–$600.
