Seth Thomas “Patent
Clock”, ca. 1830. This is a rare 8-day wooden movement clock from Seth Thomas, circa 1830 or later. It uses an 8-day mahogany
plate movement (Type 1.22) designed by Eli Terry and probably manufactured by E. Terry & Sons. The mahogany-veneer case
is 36.5 inches tall on paw feet in front and turned feet in back, with bronze-stenciled half columns and a stenciled splat of an eagle
holding arrows over a possible globe of the world. The stenciling is strong, particularly on the splat. The dial glass
is period with replaced putty, the lower door glass is original with the original gilt and black border and lower section, while the
upper image of St. Mary’s Chapel has been either extensively touched up or repainted. There are two ivory escutcheons with working
latches and keys. The wooden dial is clean, bright, and with colorful spandrels and a gilded wreath below the mainstem. The hands are period, including the seconds bit. The 8-day, time-and-strike wooden movement is running and striking on an iron
bell, driven by two period 12-lb cast iron weights and a period pendulum bob. There is a clean, bright label inside. There
isn’t much to not like here. One of the best 8-day wooden clocks I have seen. $450–$600.
