Jeromes’ &
Darrow bronzed looking glass clock, 1828. This example contains the Noble Jerome thin plate movement which was troublesome
and was only used for one year before switching to groaner movements and Terry-style movements. The thin movements allowed
the cases to be just 3 inches deep while 35 inches tall, but they were unstable when the weights were at the top of the case; later
cases using the groaner or Terry movements were thicker and less likely to topple over. These clocks always throw me for a loop
because the strike train is on the right side, the time train on the left. But this is the clock that replaced the pillar
& scroll because it was more rugged and more fashionable, with the bronzed columns and large mirror. Chauncey Jerome
was the Elon Musk of his day, an industry disruptor. This clock has a clean, old finish and bright bronze stencils with
little wear on the columns and splat. The door hinges on the left and there is a working key latch on the right. The dial
glass is old and likely original, the mirror is old and could be original. The wooden dial is very clean with little wear,
and the hands are proper. The 30-hour wooden movement is running although I did not get it to strike on the iron bell, and is
driven by two rectangular 4-lb iron weights. There is a very good label inside; it may even have the original pulley dust covers
on top. This is as good as it gets for this rare model. AAC sold a similar example in 2024 for $250. $150–$300.
