Mark Leavenworth
& Son pillar & scroll, 1825-1829. The Leavenworths worked out of Waterbury CT making exclusively wooden works clocks. Their
clocks are highly sought after. This P&S is in excellent original condition, 30.5 inches tall with the brass urn finials. The
finials have seams and mount on wooden posts. The scrolls, skirt, and feet all appear to be original and undamaged, with no
evident repairs. Both glasses are original, with the original putty; the tablet is very well preserved with just a bit of touch-up,
I think, and some scattered losses. The wooden dial board is unusual in that the numbering is gilded with black border shadowing. I have not seen that before. The dial is clean with colorful spandrels and a center floral decoration. The hands are period. The 30-hour time-and-strike wooden movement will run for a bit, and probably longer with some attention; it will strike on the iron
bell. There are two period weights, a brass bob, and a good label on the backwall. Nothing not to like here. AAC
has sold two Leavenworth & Son pillar & scrolls for an average of $694. Leavenworths seem to be everybody’s favorite
P&S, and this is a good one. $350–$700.
