Samuel Terry pillar
& scroll, 1819-1827. A second example by Eli’s brother, but there is an important difference here – this one shows
Samuel working in Plymouth under his own name before moving to Bristol (compare the labels between this clock and #2). In fact,
Samuel had set up his own shop in Plymouth in 1819 and was making some clocks outside of his partnership with his older brother. The 31-inch case has an old finish with some patina; the brass urn finials are on wooden posts, the scroll-top is undamaged, and the
feet and skirt look original. Both glasses are original with the original putty; the tablet has suffered considerable losses. The wooden dial is clean with good gilding in the corners and a gilded inner ring. The hands are typical for Samuel Terry. The wooden 30-hour time-and-strike movement doesn’t want to run but it will strike; there are two period weights, period pendulum
bob, and a good Plymouth label inside. A very original example. AAC sold a similar example in 2022 for $801. $400–$600.
