Wm. L Gilbert Clock Co. “Amphion”, ca. 1885.  An excellent example of one of the premier Late Victorian clocks in all its glory, and Gilbert’s top of the line.  The walnut case is 25 inches tall with a very old, possibly original finish and very thick patina; there is some crustiness in places. All the ornaments and trim pieces are in place; the door glass and three mirrors appear to be original.  The dial is unsigned paper, very toned, the hands are as shown in the catalog illustration (Ly, Gilbert Clocks, page 293).  The 8-day, time-and-strike movement is signed and running, and striking on the cathedral gong, regulated by the mirrored, etched glass pendulum you expect to see. There is an alarm ring but the alarm mechanism has been removed, although the gong base that the alarm struck on is still there.  The label on the back is mostly gone.   AAC sold an Amphion last winter for $625.  $500–$650.
