95. $200
M.W. Atkins & Co. “cigar-box clock”, ca. 1851. A rare small box clock with a full decal front glass. The case is 11.5 inches tall with rosewood veneer on the front. The glass is period, perhaps not original, and has been rebacked in the door. The silver stencil is in good shape with just
a few losses to the backing. The contoured dial has been repainted, the hands are Welch-style hands and are also found on an
example shown in Gregory & King, The Clocks of Irenus Atkins, on page 39. The unusual 30-hour, time-only brass movement
is also shown on that page; note the position of the escapement at the top of the round movement, and the cutout in the bottom of
the case to allow maximum pendulum length. It is running strongly. There is a good label inside. A very nice example
of an uncommon clock; AAC sold one in 2023 for $283.
